Remembering Janet Jagan

 

PRIME MINISTER GOLDING HAILS FORMER GUYANESE PRESIDENT JANET JAGAN AS GREAT AND COURAGEOUS

Prime Minister Bruce Golding remembered former President of Guyana, Janet Jagan, as a "Great and Courageous leader" in his tribute when he signed the condolence book opened in her memory today at Jamaica House.

The Prime Minister, who was the first to sign the book, also recalled that Mrs Jagan "was at the centre of the Caribbean struggle for political independence and self determination."

Noting that the former president was an "inspiration for all Caribbean people" he said that he joined the people of Guyana as they "commended her life and contribution to present and future generations."

Former President Jagan died yesterday (March 28) at the age of 88, having served as Guyana's President from 1997-1999.

Mrs Jagan, who died on March 28 at the age of 88 was cremated on March 31 following a state funeral. She served as President from 1997-1999, but was in public life with her husband, former President Cheddi Jagan, for more than 50 years.
