LEGISLATIONS TO STEM CORRUPTION COMING ......PM

Prime Minister Bruce Golding has announced the establishment of an Independent Authority and a Special Prosecutor, to stem corruption in the police force and generally.

The Independent Authority which will investigate abuses committed by members of the police force is one of the pieces of legislation soon to come in force.

"That legislation is well advanced. It has taken a tremendous amount of work; it hasn't met the approval of all of the stakeholders, but it has reached a point where we have a basis on which we can proceed and we're hoping to have that in Parliament during the current legislative year," Mr. Golding added.

He said the Special Prosecutor will be charged with the responsibility of investigating and prosecuting acts of corruption within the public administration.

Mr. Golding explained that under the Constitution, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has ultimate control and responsibility for prosecutions and is an independent creature of the constitution. Therefore, the Special Prosecutor will function subject to the intervention of the DPP, he explained.
