Further to news reports on the extradition proceedings concerning Christopher Coke.

The Government wishes to emphasize that statutory discretion to commence extradition proceedings is vested in the Attorney General who is at present in consultation with the Solicitor General's Department and other agencies and departments of the Ministry of Justice.

The public is assured that this matter is being handled responsibly, carefully and with due regard for the legal rights of any citizen likely to be affected. A full statement will be issued in due course.
